The search page is weather, not a census of the soul

Cross-country patterns in queries and, more importantly, in what the engine puts on the page, can track shifts in distress — if they are calibrated against surveys and never treated as a headcount of the ill.

What we conclude

The high-leverage object is the page the person sees at 1 a.m., not the national ‘mood score’. A country whose crisis queries return a help panel is a different country from one that returns a thread. Query spikes without a survey underneath are weather talk. Partnership with engines — higher access, honest intercepts — is the scientific path. Scraping for a viral chart is not.

What we will not claim

We do not publish methods that make harm easier to find. We do not treat a trend line as incidence. We do not claim a population is ‘getting sicker’ because a word became cheaper to advertise.
