We join large, mixed sources until a pattern holds. Then we write the briefing other people want to steal — method they can rerun, a table, a limit they must keep. That is how an institute becomes a source, not a feed.
Find the pattern. Write the piece they cite.
Yes. The observatory exists to find regularities in large, mixed sources and to write the piece a journalist, a ministry, or another lab wants to cite with a link. Authority is that citation — with the limit still attached — not a mood and not a follower count.
Patterns across sources, not a single feed
A SERP, a survey, a headline file, a clinic count, a program log. The finding is the join. One API that ‘feels like the nation’ is weather. We sit with more than one source until the pattern still holds when a platform edits itself.
Fat articles other people cite
Thick means a claim that survives the method, a table, a dated English URL, a sentence someone can steal at 16:00. Thin is a thread. We write the first kind. CC BY if they name us and keep the limit. Russian is a door. That theft is how we become a source.
Count what looked uncountable
Loneliness as air. The page at 1 a.m. A hiring fairness file. ‘Impossible to measure’ is often ‘nobody coded the pages’. We invent the instrument, give it a version, calibrate it against a slower survey. We do not invent a world temperature to look like we invented an instrument.
The work others find too long
Coding result pages. An English original. Preregistration. A limit line. The field’s laziness is our opening. It is not a licence to ship a fake number faster than the lab next door.
What will not make us a source
- A weekly insights blog with no method. Volume is not authority. It is a content farm with a nicer serif.
- An algorithm whose only validation is that it went viral. Flu Trends already ran that experiment.
- Rewriting PubMed as ‘our research’. Synthesis is a signed take/leave line, not a laundered abstract.
- Symptom listicles harvested from panic. That traffic is a waiting room we made worse.
English is the source. Russian is a door.
English is the source
A ministry, a journal, and a newsroom cite the English URL — `/year`, not `/en/year`. The stealable sentence is written in English first. That is the language the world’s priors already speak in print.
Russian is a door, not a twin observatory
Filings, companions, a donor who already reads Russian. The house can speak that door. It does not owe a second human encyclopaedia of every briefing. Duplicating the catalogue does not buy the citation.
What we will not twin
- A full parallel twin of every page, ‘because we can’. That labor is not the observatory. It is a translation department pretending to be a source.
- Machine-only Russian hung off the English at publish time and called a second original. If a Russian door exists, a human stood behind it — or it does not ship.
