Demo: replies are pre-written, not a live companion. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

If you mention suicide, violence, or a medical emergency, the companion stops role-play and points to human help.

Atlas here. If tonight is a bargaining night, say so. We can make the next hour smaller.

  • Families affected by addiction: what research knows and what it does not

Research describes a relative's addiction as a lasting source of stress for the family: shock, isolation and stigma, strain on health and relationships. One family-based approach, CRAFT, has been tested in trials. With it, about two in three reluctant relatives entered treatment. That was more often than with Al-Anon facilitation — counselling that encourages the family member to join Al-Anon groups — or with a planned family confrontation. The outcome is entering treatment, not recovery. Family members' own well-being improved about equally with each approach. Most of this evidence concerns alcohol and the United States.

What we will not claim: Most trials concern alcohol and were run in the United States; the main outcome is whether the relative enters treatment, not recovery. Studies of family members' own well-being do not compare with receiving no help. This page is not a plan of action, does not describe signs of addiction, and does not assess anyone; it does not replace professional help.
